How we know
One dataset: 17 million real swipe decisions, anonymized swipe outcomes from a live US dating platform under a data-use agreement. We don't name the platform, and we publish only aggregates. Three of the findings:
~20%
Profiles with a single photo get ~20% fewer right-swipes than profiles with four or five. The gap holds at every age we checked.
~9%
Smiling in your first photo runs about 9% below not smiling - both genders. The most repeated profile advice does not survive the data.
Under 2s
The median profile gets under 2 seconds before the swipe. About two-thirds of swipe decisions happen within 3 seconds.

Two photos had to go.
A cluttered group selfie and a no-face filler shot. One weak photo turns a maybe into a left. Six photos that stand alone beat eight that do not.

The first line said he was leaving town.
He wanted long-term. In a two-second scan the first line is the bio, so we led with identity and moved the logistics to the end.

The same joke appeared twice.
Once in the bio, again as a prompt answer. We kept it once and spent the freed prompt on a concrete invitation: something a match can actually reply to.
